ORTHODONTICS

Causes of Orthodontic Problems

Many factors are involved in the development of these problems. We generally classify them into two categories:

A) Hereditary factors: when a child has inherited the specific dysfunction from their ancestors (e.g. a case of prognathism found in one of the parents or grandparents)
B) Environmental factors: while the genetic information is correct, certain factors alter its correct expression, causing it to deviate from the norm:

  • Loss of space due to premature extraction of a baby tooth.
  • Thumb sucking.
  • Long-term use of a pacifier.
  • Incorrect tongue position.
  • Other bad habits.
