Teeth Whitening

This is the process by which a patient can achieve brighter, whiter teeth. It can be carried out either at the clinic, at home, or with a combination of both, using whitening agents. When whitening includes an at-home procedure, the use of whitening trays is necessary. The use of laser or light is not always required — it depends on the type of whitening agent used.

An essential condition is that the patient has healthy gums and clean teeth, free of cavities. People with cervical erosion or teeth worn down by bruxism may experience sensitivity. This is managed accordingly. During the whitening process, for a few days before and after, patients should avoid using staining substances in liquid or solid form.

Smoking is prohibited during the treatment period.

The whitening result lasts three to five years and depends on the patient's habits, diet, and care. Maintaining the result requires home use of a whitening agent (one week every six months), always under the guidance of the treating dentist. Whitening toothpastes can help, under certain conditions, to maintain the result.
